pringle’s paper chase

With a stream of dismal news from the British Retail Consortium, it’s official: London’s credit crunch has graduated to a credit crisis. Not only have garment sales plummeted, but art sales have taken a beating, too. No surprise then, that rather than opting for a piece from Sotheby’s or Christie’s, budget-conscious homeowners are choosing a cheaper alternative: wallpaper. On top of the trend is Pringle of Scotland, where creative director Clare Waight Keller has collaborated with wallpaper designer Deborah Bowness (she’s previously worked with Christian Lacroix and Philippe Starck) on a book-ish fall display. The hope is that it will entice people into the shop as successfully as Pringle’s spring window did. That display, designed by artist Zoe Bradley, became a Bond Street conversation piece, and drove people in en masse looking to buy pieces from the actual window, rather than the shop. It even mesmerized design duo Viktor & Rolf, who stood in front of it for over a half-hour. Here’s hoping for a similar effect this season.
